June 13, 2013: lakefront bike ride

I finally got the energy to bike tonight, and I was so glad I did.  The waves along the shore were huge and kept crashing over the breakwall.  My feet were soaked as soon as I stepped off my bike to take some pictures, but it was worth it.  It felt so good to be outside and active.

June 12, 2013: love these girls

I can't say it enough.  I love these women.  I have learned so much about the Lord and about myself through meeting with them each week.  They know how to love, challenge, encourage, and call me out.  I can laugh one minute and cry the next, and they know exactly how to meet me in the moment.  Saying goodbye to three of them tonight was really hard!  I know that God blessed us and brought us together intentionally, so He will do the same for each of us going forward.  He is good!

June 11, 2013: Crashed again

I had great plans to bike along the lakefront today.  Still struggling with bronchitis, I was dead tired at the end of the day, so I took a 20 minute rest.  When I got up, it was raining.  I wasn't too disappointed that my bike ride was cancelled and had to go back to bed.

June 10, 2013: Sugar rush

Woah.  I was CRAZED for the rest of the afternoon and crashed when I got home.  Not expecting that.  I thought I had mastered sugar intake.

June 9, 2013: baby hipster

Snuck the picture without a skinny jeaned dad chasing me down and strangling me with his man scarf.

June 8, 2013: worst sale ever

Yes, dahhhling, come to this classy garage sale where everything is overpriced because I am too classy for you common folk.

June 7, 2013: Walk-a-thon

Students raised money today for our school by completing their first walk-a-thon.  We had a blast just relaxing and hanging out with one another today.  I have such a fun group!

June 5, 2013: Bronchitis

I have been feeling really run down, and I have a cough that sounds like a doberman.  I finally went to the Walgreens Take Care Clinic today (surprise, I have a sinus infection and bronchitis).  As I was leaving I had to take a quick survey about my experience at the clinic.  The questions were ridiculous.  But, it's true... I can't imagine a world without Take Care Clinic.  Life would be pointless.

June 4, 2013: Hello, convicts.

We took an architectural walking tour today as a field trip.  We spent time sketching the different buildings that are in the Loop.  Our guide pointed out this building and asked us if we knew what it was.  Turns out it is a prison with a fenced in exercise area at the top.  As the guide described the building's features, the criminals walking on the top floor stopped to wave at my students.  My students happily waved back.

June 3, 2013: just chilling

yep.

June 2, 2013: Lemonade Day

In school, we taught students all about becoming entrepenuers and opening their own businesses.  The kids got in groups and created their own lemonade stands.  This group decided to open up shop after our church service on Sunday.  (Two of the kids go to my church, which is awesome)!  I loved hearing the customers say to my kiddos, "Wow, I am impressed with your math skills." "You guys are so smart!" and "You kids are so impressive!"  I am really proud of them!

June 1, 2013: Dam to Dam

20K in Des Moine from one dam to another.  The company was great, the weather was perfect, and we didn't die, so I will count this run as a win!  Thanks for inviting me, Becca!

May 31, 2013: Flashback

I am visiting Becca this weekend.  Looking at Jonah's toys, I got a flashback to my own childhood.  I remember playing with these super weird creatures.  Anyone else?

May 30, 2013: SVU

Well, there goes my resolve to watch less tv.  I think I took this at hour 4.

May 29, 2013: Young Love

Larry gave Maya this hand crafted clay figurine of Sonic the Hedgehog.  Inside a traditional Chinese box.  I am thinking he loves her.

May 28, 2013: Harry Potter

Every Tuesday I have class with Harry Potter.  I have been waiting for the last 10 weeks for him to start teaching us how to apparate or pot a mandrake, but its been nothing but discussion techniques for CPS teaching.  What a git.

May 27, 2013: Spider!!

I've been attacked!  I was sitting on the couch and realized my arm was really itchy.  I tore my sweatshirt off and found this!  A spider must have crawled into my sleeve when I was in the garden.  There were over 15 bites on my arm!

May 26, 2013: We will, we will...

ROCK YOU!!

May 25, 2013: Hanging out

He's really in to putting his head upside down.  What a weirdo.

May 24, 2013: Artie meets the class

I can't begin to tell you how much I loved today.  Meg and Arthur are in town this weekend, so they stopped by my class to meet my kiddos.  The students were SO PUMPED to meet them.  As soon as Meg and Arthur walked in the door, the kids bombarded them with questions.
"What does he eat?"
"How old is he?"
"Can we make a circle and you put him in the middle of it?"
"When will he get more hair?"
"Can I tickle his foot?"

The entire time, Artie stared them all down, and drooled.  Which sent the kids into fits of laughter.

May 23, Happy Birthday, Ryan!

It was a great night celebrating Ryan's birthday.  Delicious food and good company!

May 22, 2013: Media fast update

Tonight I spent some good time in my garden before small group, reflecting on the media-less week we had. I loved this week!  I spent more time reading for fun, actually had consistent time in the Word, prayed a lot more, enjoyed time hanging out with friends, didn't neglect the garden, and even took the time to just sit on a bench and be for a while.  It was almost painful trying to grade papers without Criminal Minds in the background, which is probably why my paperwork piled up a bit more this week than normal.  I was challenged this week to be more intentional with the way I am spending my time.  We don't know how many days we have on this earth.  I hope that when mine are done, I look back and can say that I tried my best to live each moment I was given to the fullest, in whatever setting I was in.  I am definitely not saying that media is bad.  I will NOT be giving up television for the rest of my days and I will definitely return to facebook (ok fine, confession time, I checked fb a couple of times this week anyway).  I am saying that I hope I can find a good medium and not go back to endless hours of mindless television or internet surfing to help me "unwind" after a long day.

As I was pulling weeds and watering and thinking about all of this, I noticed some sidewalk chalk drawings done by the kids upstairs.  I cracked up when I figured out that this picture is most likely a television :)  Well played, kids.

May 21, 2013: Skeletits and Minecraft

I have been a chronic doodler since college.  It honestly helps me stay focused when my hands are free to draw.  I have been taking a class every Tuesday night and all of my notes are covered with scrawls and pictures and my name written in seventy different fonts.  At the end of class today I realized my doodle was subconsciously inspired by my student, Peter.  And the best part is, he would say things like, "Look at my huge skele-tit, Miss Kistler!"  (English is his second language).  Confession time:  I let him continue to think skeletons were called skeletits for a good week.  It was just too funny to correct!

May 20, 2013: weirdness

I was talking to Emily on the phone while stretching my still very sore legs.  She had to go but asked if I was free later and if she could call me back.  I told her I was doing nothing for the rest of the day except stretching.  I sent her this picture to prove it.  Since I forgot to take any other picture today, you all get to see it to.  Shoot.

May 19, 2013: Oxy Clean magic?

I believe this was round 3 of soaking my clothes in oxy clean.  Each time the water looks more like coffee.  I just can't bring myself to throw it all away!

May 18, 2013: Tough Mudder

That's right, everyone, we competed in the 2013 Tough Mudder: "Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet."  We conquered 11 miles of mud and obstacles.  We belly crawled under barb wire, in underground trenches, and through constricting tubes.  We jumped in 32 degree tanks of water, off 15 foot high planks, and over pits of fire.  We climbed (aka were thrown over) log walls, 9' walls, and quarter pipe ramps.  We even managed to make it through two electrocution pits without face planting.  It was AWESOME!

Watch the official TM Chicago video to see some highlights!  My friends even made it in the video!  They are the couple in the green shirts swinging across the rings.

May 16, 2013: Wish I didn't see that...

Our downstairs neighbor received a package from the correctional facility in Muskegon. (I blocked out her name to somewhat protect her privacy).  This is the same neighbor who I thought was going to kill me when I put dog poo on her door step.  If you haven't heard that story yet, ask me about it sometime when we are hanging out.  It's too long to write now... just know that I was NOT the antagonist :)
